Tip #5 for Natural Hair Care

ShareThis
If you have been following and personally applying the Natural Hair care tips to your hair, you should be starting to see more definition in your personal curl pattern. For those of you who are still dealing with curly hair and relaxed hair on the ends, this process can seem long as you will not see as much definition because of the relaxed hair on the ends.  Depending on your confidence level and the length of relaxed hair left to grow out, this is the time that you can either make the BIG CHOP or move towards a few protective styles to allow you to continue to grow your hair out and slowly trim away the relaxer.  If you are growing and slowing trimming out the relaxer, a traditional trim would be in order.  However, if you are wearing your curls proudly, a curly cut or trim is in order.  As women of color, we have traditionally trimmed hair once it is dry and flat ironed.  With a curly cut or trim, we want the hair to be dry as well.  The reason it is important to cut curly hair dry is because when the hair is wet, it elongates, but as the hair dries and coils it because shorter, sometimes up to 3 times shorter.  Cutting curly hair wet would result in a much shorter style than desired.   We also cut the curly hair where it lives.  If it falls at your chin level, we trim at the chin level only removing the ends.  If you are going for a specific cut, the first question you want to address is the volume factor.  If you like volume, layers would be a great option, however, if volume is what you want to avoid, nix the layers and go for a blunt type of cut.  Remember to get your hair trimmed every 6 to 8 weeks by a professional, who knows first what a trim is and secondly how to trim curly hair.  Tip #5 is Never be afraid to trim your curls, trimming will only breathe new life into them.  Curly hair is wonderful and easy to take care of, but it can look dull, fuzzy and lifeless if it is not trimmed and managed properly.  There is nothing better than seeing beautiful, bouncy, vibrant curly hair.  So, stop into Body & Soul Salon just outside of Cherry Creek near Rose Medical Center and let us trim your curls.  We are excited to take care of your hair.  Give us a call at 303 388-3339 or log onto our website to schedule your appointment online.    Stay tuned for our final tip.  We will talk about protective hair styles and options.  Tell a friend about our natural hair care tips and let us know your natural hair questions through our contact us page on our website.  We would love to hear from you.  www.denversalonandspa.com posted: September 2, 2013

Tip #4 for Natural Hair Care

Now, that we are properly shampooing our hair for maximum curl, lets talk about mainitaining the moisture level in our curls.  Our daily routines and our environment can cause our beautiful tresses to dry out quickly.  Also, when we shampoo, we are removing the moisture from the hair as well.  So, in order to minimize the moisture loss and keep the hair hydrated, we co-wash more than shampooing.  Co-washing is simply put, shampooing with conditioner instead of shampoo.  This will eliminate the striping process while manually removing debris and dirt, leaving your curls moisturized.  Remember that natural hair care products are booming and there are also lots of products that aren't all they are talked up to be.  For example, I recently reviewed a product that was a shampoo and conditioner in one called a co-wash cleanser.  Remember that shampoos are designed to strip products, debris and dirt from the hair and conditioners are designed to hydrate and treat the hair.  You can't have both in one bottle, so be careful as you shop for products to aid you in the natural hair process.  Better yet, Stop by Body & Soul and let us help you get exactly what you need.    The number of times we shampoo and co-wash are also important.  Unless you truly are putting your head in the sand daily, you do not need to wash your hair daily.  We recommend that you shampoo or co-wash a maximum of once per week.  For those of you that are faithful to your workout, the goal is to rinse the hair to remove the salt out of the hair and then recondition.  The only time we recommend you shampoo over co-washing is when you are swimming.  We recommend applying conditioner to your hair prior to swimming in order to protect your hair against the excessive drying that chorine can cause.  So enjoy the freedom of your natural curl and let us know if we can help.  We are located near Cherry Creek and Rose Medical Center.  We are salon professionals in a professional atmosphere.   We will see you soon!  posted: August 24, 2013

Tip #3 for Natural Hair Care

So Sorry for the delay in getting Tip #3 and subsequent tips to you.  I can be computer challenged and needed time to figure out what I did wrong when I initially tried to send them.  So without further delay, here is Tip #3.  All Shampoos and Shampoo techniques are not created equal.  Sulfates are in approximately 90% of all shampoos on the market today.  Why?  Because they add the beautiful foamy lather that we have come to associate with cleaning the hair.  Sulfates, most common, Sodium Lauryll Sulfate (SDS) is a skin irritant and has the ability to damage the skins barrier(protective) layer as well as, enhance allergic responses.  But the reason we are most concerned is that it has been implicated in premature hair loss and maybe the cause of hair thinning as it impairs the ability to grow hair because it can actually corrode the hair follicle.  SDS has also been know to cause scalp irritation, eczema, dandruff and other scalp conditions.   But enough of why we don't want to use Sulfates.  Let's talk about how to use our Sulfate Free Shampoo!  When wearing your hair in it's natural curly state, the shampooing process is quite different.  You will want to massage the hair and avoid the normal finger spread scrub of your usual shampooing.  There is nothing wrong with the finger spread shampooing if you are wearing a smooth or relaxed style, but this type of shampooing for curly hair will create frizz and excessive volume.  Keeping your hands flat to the head and gently massage the hair in a circular directions will allow your best curls to come forward.  Remember that Sulfate Free Shampoos have little to no lathering, but this does not mean that your hair and scalp are not getting clean.  Try out the new technique for more definition in your curls.  Stop by Body & Soul today and check out our Sulfate Free Options.  We are near Cherry Creek, Rose Medical Center and coming soon Trader Joes!  Stay tuned for tip #4: Co-Washing your hair

Tip #2 for Natural Hair

At Body & Soul, Natural hair is not just an after-thought.  We know that options are important in today's fast pace, everchanging world.  We must be ready to adapt and change at a moments notice, and natural hair is no different.  Our 1st tip for Natural Hair was to have patience.  In other words, give it a chance...      Our 2nd Natural Hair tip is Moisturize!  Dry Hair is life-less, dull and can be frizzy and unmanageable. With Natural Hair styles, moisture plays a major role in the maintenance and care of your style.  The trick is to find the right product to get the result that you are after.  Some moisturizes are designed to add weight the the hair and elongate the hair, giving your coils less definition and the appearance of longer hair.  While other moisturizers will define your curls and minimize frizziness.  So the moisturizing product that you choose should depend on the style that you are trying to accomplish.  Again, as we discussed with our 1st tip, always start with your hair wet, not dripping but wet.  This allows for the products you are going to apply to penetrate the hair and helps with work-ability of the product.   Water alone is not a moisturizer and will dry out your hair.   Always follow wetting your hair with a moisturizer.  Apply the moisture in sections, using your fingers to detangle the hair and work the product through each section.  Once you have work the product through from scalp to ends, style your hair with your fingers and let it dry.  You can sit under a dryer or air dry, but do not touch your hair until it is dry.  Once the hair is dry, you can lift and style to your liking.   Try several different products until you find the products that you love in your hair.  At Body & Soul, we carry several natural hair care products...from Mizani true textures, DevaCurl and more...including Redken's Curvaceous Ringlets.  Stop by Body & Soul near Cherry Creek and Rose Medical Center or log onto our website http://www.denversalonandspa.com to schedule your Free hair consultation.    Remember:  Moisture is key to beautiful, healthy Natural Hair.  Stay Tuned for Natural Hair Tip #3: All Shampoos and Shampoo Techniques are not created equal for Natural Hair!   posted: July 1, 2013

Keratin Smoothing Treatments Which is Best?

ShareThis
As we move into a new era of keratin smoothing services, new products are constantly being seen. The majority of these products are found in salons but they are also on the shelves in the do-it-yourself beauty supply stores. Body & Soul is proud to offer Keratin Complex Smoothing services. Keratin Complex is formulated with Keratin that is humanely extracted from the sheared wool of sheep. During application keratin is then infused into the strands of hair where it acts as a deep penetrating re-conditioner. Keratin molecules fill in where hair has been damaged by chemicals and daily heat styling. Because the keratin molecules are encapsulated in the hair strands, when the hair is flatironed, there is no strong smell, no fumes and no need to cover the nose and mouth. Keratin Complex Smoothing services will reduce frizz in all hair types making chemically relaxed, color-treated and natural hair easier to maintain. ALL KERATIN PRODUCTS AND SERVICES ARE NOT EQUAL. Enjoy smoother, silkier, heathier hair while reducing the time and amount of heat it takes to achieve maximum results.
