We have had a busy two months!  We just returned from Orlando, Florida where we attended the Premiere Beauty Show with over 40,000 other beauty professionals.  We attended some great classes, learned a few new techniques and found some new products, all to share with you.

First, at Body & Soul, we are concerned with the health of your hair.  We have been focusing on hair loss and various types of alopecia.  One of our goals is to provide you with services that do not add to any pre-existing damage, hair loss or alopecia, more specifically traction alopecia.  During the show, time was spent concentrating on Advanced Trichology information and training, non-surgical hair replacement techniques and extension services that have the health of your natural hair in mind.  We also know that the health of your hair begins with the nutrients you ingest, so we have been researching products that will aid in the health and growth of your hair.  And we found one!

Viviscal Professional

Viviscal Professional Hair Growth Program is a 100% drug free dietary supplement, scientifically formulated with the exclusive marine complex AminoMar.  Viviscal Professional supplies vital nutrients to the hair follicle to promote existing hair growth and nourish hair from within, reducing breakage and shedding.  Viviscal Professional has been the power tool that many celebrities and their stylist use to keep their hair in optimum condition.  Viviscal Extra Strength has been on the market for some time and remains available.  However; Viviscal Professional is a more efficacious line and is only offered in doctor's offices and salons.  Two Tablets of Viviscal Professional supplements contain more AminoMar than two tablets of Viviscal Extra Strength.  In addition, Viviscal Professional contains more Biotin and Vitamin C.  Unique to Vivisacal Professional supplements, Apple Extract Powder (Procyanidin B-2), was added, which favorably affects hair follicles during the growth phase of the hair growth cycle.  Procyanidin B-2 has also been shown to increase the density and diameter of hair.  And lastly, L-Cystine and L-Methionine were added, which are essential amino acids in the formation of hair and skin, offering a positive effect on hair growth.  Results can be seen within the first 3 months.  Viviscal works on men and women and all ethnicities and hair types.  Viviscal is not suitable for individuals who are allergic to fish, shellfish, or for women who may be pregnant or breastfeeding. Viviscal Professional does not contain dairy, soy, nuts or eggs.  Viviscal Users saw an 80% increase in terminal hair in 6 months.  Cost $180 for 3 month supply.  We are passing along the discount the was available to us at the show.  So, we are offering Viviscal Professional to you for $144.  A 20% savings.
#ViviscalProfessionalDenver #HairGrowthDenver

Remember as you use your Viviscal Professional to aid in the return of hair growth around your edges, avoid styles that created the hair loss.  Avoid Ponytails, Braids, Weaves and locs that are:
1.  Tight and create Tension on your hair
2.  Weight, such as braid extensions or weaves with heavy extension hair.  The commercial hair should not have more weight than your natural hair otherwise it pulls on your hair.
3.  Excessive Heat - avoid high heat on irons and pressing combs and if possible avoid applying daily heat by wrapping your hair before bed.
4.  Over processing with Chemicals - it is always best to have any chemical process, whether color, relaxers, perms or keratin treatments applied by a licensed professional, so that overlapping and overprocessing can be avoided.  Remember Healthy Hair begins and ends with you caring for your own hair.

We are here to help you keep your hair as well as keep the health of your hair.  We are located near Cherry Creek, near Trader Joes on Colorado Blvd and 8th Avenue.  #BodyAndSoulSalonDenver #TexturedHairDenver #HairYouLoveToWear posted: June 13, 2016

At Body & Soul, we are always looking to improve the health of your hair and for many years, we have been educating our clients on the damaging effects of certain styling options.  Well, now we have additional information supporting our views.

John Hopkins University has confirmed a "strong association" between certain scalp-pulling hairstyles and the development of traction alopecia.  Traction alopecia is gradual hair loss caused by damage to the hair follicle from prolonged or repeated tension on the hair root.  An estimated one-third of African-American women suffer from the condition, making it the most common form of hair loss in our demographic, was reported after the Journal of American Academy of Dermatology published the study.

But, we know that traction alopecia is not just affecting women of color.  We have seen many caucasian women with traction alopecia from ponytails and pulling the hair up and now men are joining the ranks with their current styling options, such as dreadlocks, braids, man buns and ponytails.

The study also agrees that traction alopecia can be reversed if caught quickly and alternative styles are adopted.  There are many products that claim to regrow hair back from the damages of traction alopecia, however; many are not successful at their claims. One treatment that has had some effect on traction alopecia, but only in it's early stages is minoxidil treatments. Some women state that the results have been great, but they have also eliminated the cause of the traction alopecia, so it may be that the hair is growing back because the tension, pulling and weight issues have been removed.  But nevertheless, they have seen improvement.

Styles that have high potential for traction alopecia include braids, dreadlocks, ponytails, weaves and extensions.  The traction alopecia can be intensified if you are using these styles while also chemically straightening  or using excessive heat on your hair.

The greatest risk with extensions is when the extensions are glued in and next would be braided extensions due to the tension of the braids.  Remember that there are 4 contributing factors to Traction Alopecia. 1.  Tension 2. Weight  3. Heat and 4. Chemicals.  Tension and/or weight alone can lead to excessive traction alopecia, but heat and chemicals will further its progression.

We have included the link to the John Hopkins study for your review.  Please feel free to call us with any questions you may have, but here are a few tips you can use.

http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/news/media/releases/all_hairstyles_are_not_created_equal

So, what can you do?

The best option is to eliminate any styles that create tension and pull on the hair.  Of course, we know that we lost many of you with that suggestion, so if you choose to wear ponytails and braids make sure they are loose with minimal tension. This will not eliminate the hair loss, but minimize it.  Keeping the braids loose may cause you to remove the braids more often, but the benefits are greater than the sacrifice.  We recommend removing braids frequently at least every 2 months.  When wearing ponytails, we recommend positioning the ponytail in different areas to eliminate stress in one area, but always wearing the ponytail loose.

When considering extensions, consider options that do not require glue or braids.  These options such as microlink, tape-in and fusion extensions offer greater health to your hair and scalp.  These options eliminate excessive weight with no tension on your hair.

Lastly, you can opt for hair styles that allow for movement and freedom of your natural textures.  Straight styles can also be safe with proper application of relaxers and/or heat.  This means if your are self relaxing, stop waiting for the burns of relaxers and using excessive heat.  Better yet, stop relaxing yourself and come see us.  Remembering that Body & Soul offers these safer options as well as many options for your textured or straightened hair that will keep your tresses beautiful and healthy.

HAIR EXTENSIONS 101 part 3

ShareThis
Happy Friday!  We are back with more information on extensions.  The next type of extension technique that we will discuss is Fusion.  There are 2 options for Fusion extensions. Fusion is one of the oldest extension techniques.  Fusion extensions are great for those who have committed to hair extensions.  If you love wearing extensions and plan to wear them for any length of time, Fusion is the best option for you.  Fusion is not ideal for clients that want their hair hidden or masked as your hair is visible and your hair and the extensions will need to be maintained as you would your hair.  Clients with thinning hair may not be the best candidate for Fusion extensions as a small amount of coverage is need in the crown area to mask the attachments.  This technique looks and feels very natural on most clients whether they have fine hair or a full head of hair.

As always, with any extension technique, it is important to seek out a certified and experience stylist to complete your extension service, to avoid damage to your hair.

The first is Hot Fusion extensions.  This method is most common as it does not require much more than keratin and a keratin melting tool.  The keratin tipped extension is melted on a small section of your hair bonding the two together.  This method is time consuming because 100-200 small fusion sections per head depending on your hair thickness and density.  The time span is usually 4-5 hours depending on the amount of hair being added in.

Cold Fusion is similar to Hot Fusion.  Cold Fusion requires a Cold fusion machine.  These machines can be expensive and this is the reason that most stylist do not offer Cold Fusion extensions.  Cold Fusion keeps the heat away from the client's allowing for more comfort and eliminating the opportunity to burn the client or stylist during the process.  This does not mean that the hair can not be damaged with Cold Fusion, that is why it is so important to seek out a stylist that has been trained and certified on Cold Fusion Techniques.  Again, 100-200 small sections are applied for a full head of Fusion extensions.  Some Cold Fusion systems will still require 4-5 hours for installation, but as technology improves, our knowledge and application techniques improve as well, and we offer Euro SoCap Cold Fusion which takes 90 minutes or less for a full head application.  Also, with Euro SoCap Cold Fusion the attachments become transparent and allow for less visibility of the attachment.

Fusion extension are more expensive than other extension services, but the benefits outweigh the expense.  Fusion extentions last from 4 to 6 months, so that you are only required to visit your stylist for this service 2 to 3 times per year.  And depending on the Fusion technique that you and your stylist select, the time you spend in the salon can be minimal as well.

We have a certified Fusion Stylist at Body & Soul and we offer both Hot and Cold Fusion techniques.  We are a full service salon near Rose Medical Center.  Stop by Body & Soul or give us a call for a Free Extension Consultation.  We would be happy to help you get to your full hair potential whether natural or not, with or without extensions.  We are about Results.

See you next Friday for our last installment of Hair Extensions 101

Extensions 101 Part 2

ShareThis
As promised, this is part 2 of our Basics on Extensions.

Tape-In Extensions is the next option for Hair Extensions.  They are lightweight, if properly applied, cared for and made with good quality hair, are absolutely phenomenal.  Your natural hair is placed between them and they are clamped around the strands.  Tape-ins would be ideal for all hair types, especially fine hair, causing the least amount of strain and possible damage to thin hair while adding volume and length.  Tape-ins allow you to add color or highlighting without damaging or high commitment to color.  Tape-in extensions are seamless and very natural looking to the eye.  Your choice in curl texture is important depending on how you are planning to wear your extensions because your hair will not be hidden or masked in any way.  Maintenance for Tape-in Extensions includes shampooing as usual, but conditioning and any oils or creams should be put on the hair from the midshaft down. Also, brushing and detangling daily.  Tape-In Extensions can be worn for 6-8 weeks. Another benefit of tape-in extensions is that the hair can be reused, so it is important to have a good quality hair.

The next type of Extension option is Microlinks, also known as microbead or micro-rings.  Microlink extensions are applied on small sections of hair.  The microlinks are attached with a small plastic or copper coated cylinder, which is simply clamped to attach the hair and the extension hair together.  Microlinks are very discreet.  You can run your fingers through your hair and shampoo and condition as usual.  This method of extensions can be considered as easy maintenance and must be maintained every 8-12 week.  This time span is based upon your hair growth and hair type.  The maintenance process involves removing the microlinks and reapplying them in the proper position to insure that there is no damage or stress on your hair. Keep in mind that your hair will not be hidden or masked.  Just as with Tape-In Extensions, Microlink extension hair can be reused several times, saving you money.

Please feel free to give us a call or email us with any questions you may have in regards to extensions and the proper care for your hair while wearing extensions.  Stay tuned for Part 3 of the Extension 101 Blog.

HAIR EXTENSIONS 101

ShareThis

What do you really know about extensions?
Here at Body & Soul, we offer several types of hair extensions, because we know that hair extensions are not one type fits all.   Our expertise on hair extensions is not limited to what is seen on YouTube or in the latest video.  We specialize in quality Hair extension services for the health of your hair.  We are aware that there are a lot of stylist that can give you a nice looking weave, but the aftermath is hair loss, thinning edges and traction alopecia just to name a few.  But we realize that healthy hair is the key to beautiful hair extensions.
So, we will share with you a series of extension information over the next four Fridays.  So, let’s start with some extension basics.
First, a Consultation!  This is the most important step and should be an open communication between you and the stylist.  The desired style, hair color, and lengths should all be shared with the stylist. Ask all the questions you have.  This is also the time for the stylist to share with you how the style needs to be maintained, type of extensions best for you, initial evaluation of your hair and if the style is even an option for you.  Honesty is always best and if your hair won’t allow for a certain technique or style, we would rather offer a service that is beneficial to you than a service that you will ultimately not be happy with.
Cost of the hair is not included in the extension services at Body & Soul.  We will assist in the selection process or even pick up the hair for you, but you are responsible for the cost of the hair.  If we pick up the hair for you, a deposit for the estimated cost of the hair will be taken at the time the appointment is made.
After the initial consultation and appointment scheduling,  the stylist should evaluate your scalp and hair to determine the types of extensions that would best suit your hair and scalp.  This process should be carried over to the shampoo bowl.  This will determine your hair texture and allow the stylist to evaluate what tools and techniques will be needed.
Now, let’s get into the types of extension options.
Braided or Sewn Hair Extensions
Sewn-in extensions are the most common.  They are ideal for coarse, curly or thick hair because the thickness of the client’s hair can be masked with various braiding techniques, allowing the client’s hair to be completely hidden or only a desired section of the clients hair left out to give a more natural appearance.  Sewn-in Hair Extensions allow the client more styling options and freedom to wear hair types, color and textures that they choose.    This type of Hair Extension technique can be worn by most, but is not the best alternative for clients with minimal texture and fine hair.  Although this extensions service can be worn for 4-6 weeks,  regularly scheduled maintenance  is highly recommended to keep the client’s hair and extensions clean and to avoid the client’s hair from dreading under the extensions.   Many times clients prolong the wear of sewn-in extensions, because the extensions still look good, but the client’s natural hair and scalp need to be tended to and need to be addressed, so the maximum time of 6 weeks should be adhered to.   When receiving sewn-in extensions, the braids should not be too tight and the extensions should not be worn past the recommended time as traction alopecia can be caused from the pulling of braids and the weight of the extension hair pulling on the client’s natural hair.   If the extensions are maintained properly and the client is unable to remove the extensions in the recommended timeline, a rethreading service should be completed to tighten up the extensions to avoid stress on the client’s natural hair, until the removal and reapplication process can take place.  Re-threading is not always an option.  Many factors decide if re-threading can be completed such as the condition of the client’s natural hair, extension hair and braids as well as how the extensions have been maintained.  Sewn-in extensions can take 3 to 5 hours depending on the type of braid pattern, head size and sewn-in technique required for the desired look and the amount of hair that a client desires.
Pronto Weaves
Pronto weaves, also known as Quick weaves, are ideal for most hair types and textures, clients who like to switch up often and also love versatility. This technique also allows the client’s hair to be completely hidden or only a desired section of the clients hair left out to give a more natural appearance to the hair extension application.  This method is not recommended for fine hair clients if intermingling the pronto into the clients natural hair as the removal process is very stressful to thin, fine hair and can result in hair loss.  Pronto weaves last up to three weeks.  This method is called a pronto because it takes no more than one hour to install. If extensions are shampooed and conditioned they will slip out because this method is applied by using adhesives.  This is also the reason this technique is considered temporary; however, if you are looking for something quick, temporary and inexpensive I would recommend a pronto. When removing a pronto you have to be mindful of the amount of tension to avoid damage to your own hair.  We always recommend professional removal for the health and safety of your natural tresses.
Body & Soul offers a wide variety of Hair, Nail and Skin care services.  We specialize in textured hair, color and extensions.  We are on 8th Avenue, just East of Colorado Blvd. Please feel free to call 303 388 3339 with any questions you have about any of our services.  Check out
